With just one more week to go before the running of the 2007 Preakness Stakes, horse race bettors are looking to a few things before making their selections.
One in particular is the track bias which could have a major impact on the outcome. In the run for the Roses at Churchill Downs the track was still damp after the torrential downpour on Friday it appeared the horses hugging the rail all day were finishing in the top which held true when Street Sense blazed to glory on the rail to win the Kentucky Derby. With Street Sense being the obvious favorite it is expected that the public money will be on this Derby winner who ran the derby at such fast fractions and came from behind to win.
An old rule of horse wagering is never bet on a horse at low odds when he will be trying to do something he has never done before! Namely running the 1 ¼ mile track. Curlin going into the Derby was favored but several things happened, he was finally challenged by horses of his own caliber, he had never ran the 11/4 and he wasn't use to coming off the pace against quality horses. However Curlin did gather himself in the final ½ mile and finished it in 50 seconds which was only 1.2/5 seconds of the winner. Now that Curlin has this hard race under his belt he should improve in the Preakness.

Derby experts predict there are a couple of late finishers who could improve immensely for the Preakness and possibly win it. The outside shots include the 5th place finisher Sedgefield and the 17th place finisher Teuflesberg. Both of these two pressed in the early pace with Sedgefield benefiting from an inside trip and Teuflesberg fading on the far turn.
It is expected that several jockeys will try to close off the rail in this race to prevent a repeat performance by Street Sense. Ironically one wonders if it is going to matter much as Street Sense was able to come from 20 lengths behind with lightening fractions to finish heads above the rest of the field. With only 3 races this year so far, it is expected that Street Sense may actually have his peak performance at the Preakness.
