West Virginia Mountianeers vs. Cinncinati Bearcats

Despite a gut-wrenching and untimely loss in their last game, West Virginia (7-1, 2-1) still has plenty to play for as they battle Cincinnati (5-4, 2-2) this Saturday. Due to the fact that they lost their biggest game of the season, their head coach, Rich Rodriguez, needs to convince his players that all is not lost when it comes to the big picture. The 10th-ranked Mountaineers will be looking to rebound from a potentially devastating loss when they host Cincinnati at Mountaineer Field in an all-important Big East matchup on Saturday at 12:00 P.M. EST. It should be very interesting to see if the Bearcats will be able to use their superb defense to hold off the Mountaineers' Pat White, the starting quarterback who did his part to help West Virginia win against Louisville. West Virginia has had little trouble with Cincinnati in previous battles, going 12-1-1 in the all-time series. The Mountaineers rolled to an easy 38-0 road victory against the Bearcats last season.

Cincinnati's defense has been the epitome of tough and reliable. They have allowed a mere 254.6 yards of total offense during their past five meetings. Their performance has been highlighted by an incredibly low 66.0 rushing yards allowed over those five games. Due to numbers like these, the Bearcats' defense is ranked 13th in the nation against the run. Cincinnati will be facing its fourth Top 25 team this season. They have yet to have much success, as they have lost to Ohio State, Virginia Tech, and Louisville. The Bearcats have high hopes of becoming eligible for a bowl game for the fifth time in the last seven seasons. However, they are definitely aware that it will not come easy for them. Their final three opponents having an imposing record, a combined 18-6.

Though a strong effort by their defense led Cincinnati to its fourth win in five games, a 17-3 victory over Syracuse on Oct. 28, their defense will most definitely be tested by the Mountaineers. West Virginia's ground attack is impressive, as it ranks second in the country at 318.9 yards per contest. After winning their first seven contests, West Virginia had every reason to think about a fourth straight Big East title and a possible national championship. But much of those hopes were smashed by a 44-34 loss at #5 Louisville on Nov. 2. Because of that game, West Virginia is now behind in their conference, and has no chance at the big prize. The disappointing loss ended the Mountaineers' school-record 14-game win streak. It was also their first loss in 39 games when scoring 30 points or more, going back to 1998. It will be interesting to see if they can rebound from the loss against Louisville, and handle the Bearcats on their home field.
